Annual Migration: The Maasai Mara PDF Print E-mail

Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara The maasai mara is a fascinating ecosystem covering 1500sqkm of savannah grassland, woodlands and riverine forests. It is inhabited by the Big 5, as well as a diversity of other plains game and a rich varierity of bird life. Every year, usually between july and October, the promise of rain brings more than 1.5m wildbeest and zebra together in one massive herd headed for the rich bounty of lush grasslands in the Maasai Mara.

They congregate at the mara river. Their crossing into Kenya from Tanzania is a dramatic spectacle fraught with lurking danger from crocodiles and other hopeful carnivores. The mara river is whipped up as the heaving throng of beasts flows forward, struggling a cross in a frenzy of fear.

The wildebeest are a bundant and their migration patterns include not only the spectacular mara-serengeti migration, but also seasonal treks by kenya’s own home-bred wildebeests. These creatures follow the grass whenever it is to be found. Because the migration lasts for up to 4 months, visitors have ample opportunity to see the action. This unforgettable sight has long been dubbed the “Greatest show on earth”In 2007, it added the long-deserved tittle of  the  seventh wonder of the modern world.
