The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Ol Pejeta

Chimps are among the most loveable and intelligent of all animals. Unfortunately they’ve not always had it so easy; many are killed for bush meat and loss of habitat through deforestation has seen their numbers decline.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Ol Pejeta in Nanyuki cares for about 100 chimps from around Africa. Tourist visits can be arranged on request as both day trips or perhaps an overnight stay at the Sweetwates Tented Camp, a charming blend of ‘luxury under canvas’ within the 96,000 Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Rearing orphaned elephants has been almost impossible because they cannot digest ordinary milk and soon succumb to malnutrition. Dame Daphne Sheldrick was the first person to successfully rear orphaned elephants on a unique formula that she developed over 28 years of trial and error.

The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a great place to visit if you have a few spare hours in Nairobi (mornings only). Each of the orphaned eles has a watcher who is with them every moment of the day. They will regale you with tales of their wards and you will also have a chance to take pictures and maybe even touch the little elephants.
