Unfortunately they’ve not always had it so easy; many are killed for bush meat and loss of habitat through deforestation has seen their numbers decline. Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Rearing orphaned elephants has been almost impossible because they cannot digest ordinary milk and soon succumb to malnutrition. Dame Daphne Sheldrick was the first person to successfully rear orphaned elephants on a unique formula that she developed over 28 years of trial and error. The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a great place to visit if you have a few spare hours in Nairobi (mornings only). Each of the orphaned eles has a watcher who is with them every moment of the day. They will regale you with tales of their wards and you will also have a chance to take pictures and maybe even touch the little elephants. |
