This is not a complete list but a recommendation of some books that we find most useful and interesting.

Out of Africa” by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen).

rekking in East Africa, David Else (Lonely Planet 1998). The most comprehensive guide for trekking and walking in East Africa and also contains good background information. ISBN 0-86442-541-4.

3 Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya, Cameron Burns (Cordee 1998). A very practical guidebook with extensive route descriptions. ISBN 1-87189-098-5.
4. Guide to Tanzania, Philips Briggs (Bradt Publications 1999). One of the best guidebooks about Tanzania, with a good chapter about the history of Tanzania, and lots of practical information. Also good suggestions for trekking and travelling off the beaten track. ISBN 1-898323-86-0.
5. Tanzania , Zanzibar, and Pemba, Mary Fitzpatrick (Lonely Planet 1999) The other excellent general guidebook about Tanzania with lots of useful practical information and very up to date. ISBN 0-864427-26-3.

ilimanjaro National Park Leaflet, (Tanzania National Parks 1987). This 60 page booklet can only be obtained in Tanzania, but contains a good general description of the mountain and the different climate zones you walk through. It also has a small map.

7. Arusha National Park, (Tanzania National Parks 1987). This park consists of two parts; a wildlife game viewing area and Mt. Meru. The leaflet focuses on the flora and fauna but also contains some information about climbing Mt. Meru. This 50 page booklet can only be obtained in Tanzania.
8. Kilimanjaro, John Reader (Elm Tree Books 1982). A beautiful coffee-table book which also gives good descriptive information about the mountain. Also very strong on the history of Kilimanjaro. An excellent souvenir of the climb. ISBN 0-8766339-17-1.
Maps
1. Kilimanjaro, 1:75,000 (West Col productions) Available outside Tanzania. The best Kili map.
2. Kilimanjaro, 1:50,000 (Mark Savage) Does not cover the lower slopes of the mountain. Widely available in East Africa.
3. Mt. Kenya, 1:50,000 (West Col productions) Available outside Tanzania.
4. Kenya & Tanzania, 1:2,500,000 (Bartholomew) There are other good general maps available both in Nairobi and outside East  Africa.
5. New Maps of  Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Parks. Hand drawn maps without official scales, but both have informative descriptions and are good souvenirs. Only available in Tanzania.
